LESSONS WITH NIGEL

ONLINE LESSONS VIA ZOOM

Nigel offers lessons to all levels including older beginners. Normally lessons are conducted via Zoom; when you book you'll get a link for the meeting but it's better to have him in your Zoom contacts using a Zoom contact request to the Tiger Chess gmail address.

BOOKING & RESCHEDULING

Booking into one of Nigel's available lessons slots is done online and payment taken at the time of the booking. The booking software also allows rescheduling of appointments up to 24 hours in advance of a lesson. Please note that no shows and any technical problems are not rescheduled so please check your sound before any lesson. It is also advisable to download any updates to Zoom well in advance.

In the case of 'emergencies' that mean you are too late to reschedule a lesson, really cannot make the slot or have insuperable technical difficulties, please send Nigel some questions and/or games to annotate so you get some value out of the scheduled time. It is good practice to do this before each and every lesson. Alternative you can just cancel, but this incurs a £15 charge to be deducted from the refunded lesson fee.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Nigel will be on Zoom just before a lesson and send you an invite to the meeting. He will share his screen with you showing a chess board with coordinates showing if you need them. Lessons are tailored to the student concerned and are normally concluded within a few minutes of the scheduled finishing time.

AGE LIMITS

There is no age limit to taking lessons with Nigel. Age is also no barrier to improvement as players can learn new methods and techniques even if their brain power is no longer expanding rapidly. In taking lessons younger children may need some supervision and help, especially if they are not comfortable with Zoom.

LESSON TOPICS

The lesson topics are tailored to students depending on their stage of development and what they want to achieve. Here are some examples of what might be expected:

i) Game assessments and general advice about the direction to take.
ii) Going through games in which students guess particular moves and explain their reasoning.
iii) Student requests.
iv) Opening repertoire development, ideally with a student's choices focusing on plans and concepts so as to nurture middle game understanding.
v) Analysis of several student games.
vi) Looking through a large batch of internet games, picking out any important points.
vii) Looking at a new strategic concept, backed up by example games.

After each lesson students receive a pgn file of the material.
